Wayne C. Henderson of Rugby, VA is well known for his fast guitar pickin of fiddle tunes. He also enjoys other styles such as blues and jazz. Wayne is a superb craftsman of fine musical instruments and has made over 250 guitars. Wayne started playing guitar when he was about 5 years old. He built his first guitar out of cardboard when he was 10. He made his first wooden guitar in 1964 with the help of Albert Hash, a well known fiddle maker from Ashe County from the mahogany plywood of an old interior door. Wayne worked for Gruhn Guitar in Nashville, TN for several years where he honed his skills at woodworking, repairing and making instruments. Wayne's instruments are highly sought after for their clear tone and high quality workmanship. Wayne has played and demonstrated his talents all over the world and has played at Carnegie Hall and displayed his instruments at the Smithsonian Institution. The Wayne C. Henderson Guitar Competition and Music Festival is held at the Grayson Highlands State Park on the third Saturday of June each year. Proceeds from the festival go to promote the musical arts and provides scholarship money. Wayne has donated his time to help the community as a whole and we are very lucky to have such a gifted and generous person living in our area.
