St. Mary's Church

This is the home of the
famous fresco of Jesus on the cross by renowned artist Ben Long. A
painting of the Madonna pregnant with Jesus hangs on the sanctuary wall. |
The Todd General Store
 |
The Todd General Store was built in 1914 and
is located in the southern part of Ashe County between West Jefferson and Boone.
This was a booming town, called Elkland, supplying timber for the railroads. The
town was large enough to support two hotels and a bank. It was the last stop on
the Virginia Creeper Line and many of the railroad workers lived here. When the
timber ran out and the train stopped coming, the town slowly dissolved leaving
the Todd General Store as a reminder of the past. The store is filled with
antiques and gifts as well as food for the local community. |
The West Mill Creek Area
 |
Just a little ways past Warrensville,
NC on Hwy 88 you will find this old Sharpe's electric generating dam on the
river. It quickly became a landmark for me, as just past it was the turn
off to several of my friends from the area. I don't know much of it's
history, but it is a memorable place. I would guess that it was the
first source of electric power for the people of Ashe County. When you
ride by, the first time, you will definitely want to turn around and take
another look at this beautiful spot, deep in Ashe County. |

Three Top Mountain and the Riverview Area

 |
This is a beautiful high ridge of mountains in the
western part of Ashe County. It is a scenic view as you proceed on Hwy
88 towards Tennessee through the Riverview Community. Music and
community events can be found year round at the Riverview Community
Building where friends and neighbors gather to help one another and
raise funds to maintain the old school. |

Phoenix Mountain and the Warrensville Area
 |
Phoenix Mountain seems to be the center of the county
to me and seems to separate the eastern area of Jefferson and West
Jefferson from the more rural western area. This is the view from Hwy 88
heading east into Warrensville, which seems to lie at the foot of
Phoenix Mountain. Warrensville is a busy little community at the
junction of Hwy 194 running north to Virginia and Hwy 88 running
west to Tennessee. The Blue Ridge Elementary School is located here.
There is a small shopping area that has a convenience store with gas and
food. The Warrensville Drug Store is located
here. Owner, Mack Powers is a member of the Rock Bottom Bluegrass band
playing the resonator guitar. Not too many people play the Dobro style
instrument and Mack is appreciated for his talent with this instrument
and his helpful advice and knowledge at the drug store when you're not
feeling well. |
